Outfit Interrupted: The Bralette

I’ve always been a fan of the bralette – - even before I knew there was a formal name.  Little did I know what a staple it would be in my Spring wardrobe rotation.

In preparation for Estee’s 100 Day Party (a significant milestone in Chinese tradition where you celebrate the first 100 days of a baby’s life), I not only needed to find Estee a cute red dress for the occasion but had to get into pre-baby weight in order to fit into a black jumpsuit that I purchased while I was pregnant.  The jumpsuit had deep-cut sides and a split back with button and zip closures. This loose fitting outfit is meant to be worn without a bra, but there was no way I would be able to pull that off.  A bralette was necessary and the search was on for the right style and fit.

There are many definitions to the bralette – a bustier, a lightweight piece of fabric or as my friend calls it “a bra that Corrie likes to expose to the world.” Either way, there are a variety of ways to wear the bralette for a flirty yet sophisticated look.

Here are a few of my favorite styles…

Prints: This is the leopard print I paired with my black jumpsuit(similar)!  I did not intentionally match Estee’s outfit with my bralette but it worked out nicely!

Lace: The most popular look.  I love the pop of a bright color to enhance the look.  Pink is my favorite!

Cotton Criss Cross Strappy:  I’ve made good use of this style.  These are best worn underneath a loose fitting tank or romper.  It peeks out and adds a little embellishment to the top.

Estee is now 2 months and during this time we have experienced so much as a duo, such as co-existing under one roof as a family of three, meeting new and exciting people in Brooklyn and enjoying overall mommy/baby bonding time.

My Favorite Version of a “Branzino” – Chinese Whole Fish

The post-pregnancy phase is one of complete joy and amazement. However it does come with a few downfalls such as the recovery process and most importantly shedding the extra weight that for whatever reason I thought would miraculously disappear after the baby was born.

Giving birth in January mixed with this Polar Vortex has had me cooped up indoors for the last 6 weeks.  This has not helped with my figure – - but I have  been trying to squeeze in the gym 3-4X a week.  Thankfully, my mother is nearby to release me from mommy duties for an hour while on maternity leave.

In addition to working out, I have been trying to eat better testing out new healthy recipes. One in particular (one of my healthy favorites) is my mother’s Chinese whole fish. She’s been making this for years and is it not only simple and delicious but goes well with other dishes.

Most people are familiar with  the European version of a Branzino – however the Chinese version is steamed and served with traditional ingredients such as ginger, garlic and scallions.

Here’s what you will need:

  • 1 (2 pound) whole white fish (such as sea bass or porgy), cleaned with head and tail intact
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon of sliced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup light soy sauce
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 scallion, white and light green parts only, julienned
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable or olive oil

IMG_4308Here’s what you need to do:

  • Rinse the fish in cold water and dry
  • Season with salt and pepper
  • Place fish and in a shallow dish and place on top of stainless steel steam rack in wok or stir fry pan (while most people don’t own a bamboo steam basket – this is an alternate option)

  • Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of ginger on top of the fish (the ginger adds flavor and removes any excess fishy smell)

  • Pour just enough water into the wok for steaming (make sure it does not touch the dish)
  • on medium heat – steam fish for 8-10 minutes until the fish skin flakes
  • In a separate pan, combine oyster sauce, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and scallions and saute for 5-7 minutes, without browning the garlic
  • Once fish is done steaming, take combined sauce mixture and pour over fish
  • Let sit for 5 minutes and serve

The CORRIEGABS Fall 2014 NYFW Round Up

Fashion week is coming to a close and after spending our time pining away after the fashions seen both on and off the runways we are ready to share with you the run down of our favorites. We curated a list of our top Fall RTW collections across the spectrum of the affordable (we use that term quite loosely) and the probably won’t be able to purchase in this lifetime (but a girl can dream can’t she).  Enjoy!

Gabby’s Picks

Victoria Beckham

Ladylike, Sophisticated, and for lack of a better word Posh.  This season Victoria Beckham kept the momentum of her brand going by continuing to evolve classic silhouettes into modern works of art.  With a palette of primary colors (predominately black, white, and red) with a few rare patterns mixed in; VB continued to prove that simple can be better even when brands are competing to stand out in such a crowded forum.  This collection definitely won me over as did her family sitting front row.  This post would not be complete without a shot of Harper and Becks…candid is an understatement :-)

Rebecca Taylor

I love this collection because it’s rare that you see things come down the runway that you could easily incorporate into your everyday wardrobe.  I could picture myself in each look whether it be at the office or for a special occasion.  My style tends to fluctuate between feminine and edgy on a daily basis and so the combination of flirty lady-like dresses with more masculine cuts for vests and coats was my perfect combination of hard-hitting with the right amount of softness.

Corrie’s Picks

Alice & Olivia

A&0 6

I was impressed with the vintage looks from the Alice & Olivia show and their princess fairy tale theme which featured a modern day Snow White as part of the ensemble.  The collection included lace, velvet and dark jewel tones paired with masculine themes like tweed and denim.  Also, another highlight (and I can’t believe I am even saying this) the resurgence of the Hilton Sisters out and about again…and of course my girl crush of the moment Jamie Chung.  Check out her Instagram photo of Snow White from the show.

Prabal Gurung

This season’s runway collection speaks to my fashion taste of style and comfort.  I love his use of dark color palettes paired with a variety of scarves, wraps, sashes and turtlenecks. Also the touch of fur paired with chiffon microskirts and strappy heels completes the ideal look.  Gurung set the bar for designs that are classified as contemporary, stylish and interchangeable from day to night.

Stay tuned for a recap of the beauty trends seen on the runway — coming soon!

Currently Obsessed: NYFW Street Style Looks

furr 2

It’s that time again – NYFW has taken over NYC.  Aside from the shows our favorite thing to watch out for is the style seen off the runway.  From celebs, socialites, bloggers, and models the best fashion inspiration can be seen walking the streets.  Here are our top street style looks so far…the week isn’t over yet which is great because we can’t get enough!

The key themes have been:

Layer it up

The more texture the better

Fur, leather, fur, and more leather

It’s all about the gold, glitter and metallic brocade fabrics

Winter white is your friend

Statement bags boxy and lady-like preferred

Don’t be afraid to let your pant legs go wider

Capes, ponchos, hoods, scarves and hats are functional NYFW must haves

What we love most is that everyone is having fun and not taking themselves too seriously.  And if you understand the temps consistently hovering at 20 degrees and the amount of snow, ice, and slush on the NYC streets than you would be even more impressed with these ladies :-)

Introducing Estee V! Our Favorite Things

Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes on the birth of our little girl, Estee (pronounced Es-tea).  She entered the world on January 8, weighing in at almost 8 lbs.  As you can imagine Mommy and Daddy are so in love and excited, but also overwhelmed with this new phase of our lives.  There’s no way to fully prepare for parenthood, and we have been learning along the way.  Needless to say, the last three weeks have been filled with joy and craziness – a total “shock” to the life we were used to. From bottles, receiving blankets, A&D ointment to sterilizers – we’ve checked the box for all the newborn essentials.  However in the last couple of weeks, both Estee and I have gravitated toward certain items that have made the transition easy and fun for us…for now.

The Diaper Bag: Everyone said the key to the ideal diaper bag is plenty of pocket space.  I needed a bag that was both functional and fashionable, and opted for the Tory Burch Stacked Logo Billy Baby Bag.  This bag has replaced my  daily Fendi Zucca Canvas, and has been ideal for small trips to the doctors or to grandma’s house.

WubbaNub: This fun little plush pacifier was given to me by two different people before Estee was even born and both told me it was a lifesaver.  We have a variety of pacifiers at home from Born Free to Avent, and Estee always prefers the WubbaNub.  It really helps soothe her during those fussy moments.

Air Max: With Estee only a few weeks old, its  safe to assume that I’ve been pretty busy – not only adjusting to mommyhood but running around the house and the neighborhood.  While I love my kicks (as seen in previous posts), my go to shoe of the moment is the  Nike Air Max 90 Lunar Comfort 3.0. I am a big fan of Nike Sports Wear and the Air Max 90, and love the twist Nike took with this shoe adding lunar foam and fuse to this classic model.

Minky Baby Blanket: If you haven’t heard of a Minky baby blanket from Moonbeam Minky, you should. Estee has become obsessed with these handmade, personalized blankets. With its soft and warm material, it the perfect complement to the baby room and crib.

Bella Bebe Headband: Estee looks adorable in her glittery personalized “E” headband from Bella Bebe Shop.  There are a variety of different colors and looks.  I love this shop because there are so many different designs to choose from -  perfect with all her outfits.

More to come as Estee and I will be spending lots of QT over the next couple of months and will have more favorite things to share.

Pregnancy Revelation: The Countdown and The Bag

I had a mini heart attack the other day when a friend of mine who was due a week before me went into labor 5 weeks early.  This moment really set in the reality that the official “due date” is not always so official and that Baby V has its own agenda.

The first thing I did when I went home? Started packing my hospital bag with all the essentials I will need for the big day.  It is pretty much everything you need to make you feel comfortable for at least a few days.  Depending on how long the baby will take to come along, you may be waiting around for hours.  Therefore will need all the comforts and necessities from home.

I broke out my bag into four different categories: toiletries, entertainment, other essentials and baby. Don’t forget your partner should pack a bag as well – they will be spending almost the same amount of time in the delivery room with you!

I am already nervous about being at the hospital for more than one night and therefore must have my own toiletries and beauty essentials such as Dove Hair Products, Aveeno Lotion, Benefit Facial Polish, Philosophy Shower Gel and my Elchim Luxury Dryer.

Obviously as a new mother the baby will keep me occupied but in case there is a waiting period for her arrival, I am bringing my trusted Sol Republic Headphones, Nook and iPhone to keep me entertained.

Outdoor gear like an adorable Baby Gap Snow Suit and Nike Baby Hats, as seasonally appropriate (remember, babies are extra sensitive to cold), and baby onesies to bring her home in.

Other Essentials:

Canon Powershot, Lacoste robe, chargers, extra pillows, towels, Ugg Slippers, and going home clothes.

We’re  down to the wire.  Can’t wait to introduce Baby V to everyone.

Pregnancy Revelation: Baby It’s Cold Outside

Baby its cold outside.   It was quite the appropriate shower theme since the day fell on the first snowfall of the 2013 winter season.

It was such a lovely Sunday with my family and friends that traveled from near and far to celebrate Baby V.  The event took place at one of my favorite places – Congee Village on Allen Street in Chinatown.

Here are a few shots taken with the Fuji Instax mini 8 - such a great personal touch to my shower guest book.

How cute are these cookies?  My dear friends Nikki and Mark from Wicked Good Cookies custom made these especially for the occasion.  Also, check out the ones they made for bridal shower.  Amazing.

The petite cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the LES were also a huge hit.

Holiday Gift Guide 2013: For Him

Mens Collage 2

Corrie and I have put our heads together to come up with the ultimate Holiday Gift Guide for the Men in your life.  From Fashion, Electronics, Sports, and Grooming we have it covered for all of you last minute shoppers out there (myself included)!  Ok, one small admission we may have asked the men in our lives for some help with this one so thank you Andy and EV :-)

1.  Kiehls Ultimate Man Refueling Set – This set has everything that a guy needs to maintain a flawless skincare regimen.  It includes Kiehls’ best-selling mens products and covers the basics of cleansing, moisturizing, and shaving.  It’s also a great value with $79 in full size product for $58!

2.  Bespoke Post – My favorite idea on our list and it really has the potential to be the gift that keeps on giving.  Similar to the Birchboxes of the world, each month Bespoke Post curates a themed box filled with items to inspire men to keep up with the latest trends in food, drink, and style.  Two of my favorites that they are featuring now are the Agave box which provides all of the ingredients and wares to mix up the perfect cocktail and the Aces box which brings the casino experience into your home with a wooden poker box, chips, and cards.  Each box is truly unique and will keep the men in your life on trend.

3.  Jack Spade Donegal Tweed Wayne Duffle – My idea of the perfect gym bag.  Get your guy to finally toss the backpack and upgrade to this classic man bag.

4.  Bose Solo TV Sound System – A home sound system that does the job of enhancing your viewing experience but in a streamlined package with one speaker and no additional equipment necessary.

5.  Paul Smith Blue Wool-Blend Block Striped Sweater - My boyfriend has a slight Paul Smith addiction. The quirky English designer is known for his bold designs and the use of his trademark stripes in his clothes, home wares and accessories. His shops are like curios of all things cool, unique and oh so very English. Just like my man.  This sweater is one of Paul Smith’s more understated designs for the season.

6.  The Putterwheel System - Perfect for the golf enthusiast in your world.  The Putterwheel helps golfers practice putting indoors.  A great gift for east coast guys who cant get out and play during the winter months.

7.  Nike Free Running Shoe and Fuel Band - Great gifts to start off the New Year on the right track.  Nike Frees are designed for running and this version is waterproof which is a great bonus.  Wearables are a hot trend right now and the Fuel Band is a simple and fun way to get more active and stay engaged with your fitness routine.

8.  J.Crew Lambswool Shawl Henley Sweater - A classic look and everything at J.Crew is still 30% off in-stores and online.

9. Ray-Ban Clubmaster Classic – I love sunglasses with a retro look and feel.  You can never go wrong with a pair of Ray-Bans.

10.  Cole Haan ‘Air Madison’ Wingtip - A good brown wingtip should be a staple in every man’s closet. Versatile and functional, these help to dress up jeans and look great with a suit.  You can always tell a lot about a man by his shoes!

Happy Holidays!

Holiday Gift Guide 2013: For Her

holiday gift guide large

If you are anything like me then you still have some major holiday shopping left to do.  Each year as the shopping season tends to start earlier and earlier (i.e. holiday commercials airing in October and stores opening on Thanksgiving day); I tend to rebel and start my shopping later and later.  Needless to say I just got around to compiling my shopping list and wanted to share some of my picks for this holiday season with you.  Today’s picks are ‘For Her’ and another guide ‘For Him’ will be coming soon!

1.  Rebecca Minkoff Jody Monogram Pouch – I love all things monogrammed and this bag is just the right size to act as a clutch, makeup case, or the perfect in-bag organizer.

2.  J. Crew Collection Cashmere V-Neck Boyfriend Sweater – It’s freezing in NYC right now and that has definitely influenced my clothing picks for this post.  All  I can think about are warm and cozy sweaters to keep me warm in these frigid temperatures.  I love J.Crew’s cashmere collection and right now is the perfect time to invest since everything on the site is 30% off!

3.  NARS Crime of Passion Eye, Cheek & Lip Palette - One of the things that I love about the holiday season is that my favorite cosmetic brands come out with limited edition gift sets.  This one from NARS has everything that you need in one place for the perfect put together makeup look.

4.  Baublebar Collection by Ashley Madekwe - Baublebar has become my go-to place for finding the latest jewelry trends for less.  I love this collection curated by one of my favorite fashion bloggers Ashley Medekwe.  I must have this ring and ear cuff now!

5.  StickyGram Phone Cases – Such a fun and economical gift for just about any Instagram lover on your shopping list!  StickyGram will turn your favorite Instagram photos into phone casesmagnets and iPad covers.

6.  10/10 ‘Holiday’ Trio of Polishes - A beautiful assortment of colors for any skin tone and occasion.

7.  Club Monaco Hattie Embellished Skirt - This skirt is perfect for the holiday party season and can easily transition into your Spring/Summer wardrobe as well.

8.  Gift Cards – A gift card is always a fool proof gift.  Two of my favorites are Dry Bar (every girl loves a blowout) and Soul Cycle (for the fitness enthusiast in your life).

9.  Diptyque Mini Candle Trio - A classic gift.  Enough said.

10.  Giles and Brother Bracelets – The nail bracelet trend has really taken off this year and the G&B Railroad Spike Cuff is my favorite version.  The have been appearing on both men and women everywhere and come in a wide variety of metals and finishes.  I received a stack of these for my birthday this year and it was by far my favorite gift and I haven’t taken them off since!

11.  Club Monaco Carrie Pompom Hat – A stylish yet practical hat to keep you warm this winter.

12.  Club Monaco Mireille Sweater – Another cozy sweater option with a unique edge.

13.  Jocelyn Rex Rabbit Fur Fingerless Mittens - I received these as a gift last year and loved them so much that I went on to buy them myself as gifts for friends.  They are glamorous and still keep you warm, making them my favorite cold weather accessory.

14.  West Elm Mirrored Jewelry Box - Great for any stylish jewelry lover and it can be monogrammed for a personalized touch.

Stay tuned for our Gift Guide for the Men in your life coming soon :-)
